National Hispanic Heritage Month is every year from September 15 to October 15. The independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras are all on the fifteenth of September, with Mexico’s Dia de la Raza and independence day also falling within the month. Chile’s day of independence is also observed during this time. It’s time to celebrate the lives and achievements of all Hispanic people, past and present.

Here are just a few of Houston’s upcoming events:

  • October 2-5: A Taste from the Archive: Mexican American Food History in Houston
  • October 5: 38th Annual Festival Chicano
  • October 14: Lunada 2017 at Miller Outdoor Theatre
  • October 19: Marc Anthony in concert
  • October 21: Houston Press Tacolandia

Festival Chicano 2016

H-town is clearly embracing Hispanic Heritage Month with abundant attractions and festivities, but what about our own AHS? We’ve all heard the morning announcements that recognize Hispanic people who have left their mark on history, but is there more we can do to celebrate and honor this unique, colorful, and prominent culture? Sophomore Gabe Weikel suggests “a day in the cafeteria where all kinds of food from Hispanic places is served,” and Belle Caldwell, Freshman, says “it would be fun to play Hispanic music in the halls on Fridays.”

So, Atascocita, the ideas are flowing and now the ball is in your court. This is our school, and it’s up to us to make future HHMs better than past. It’s up to us to make changes and to take action. The Hispanic population of AHS is immensely appreciated and loved, and they deserve to feel that as much as possible.
