Selena Gomez and her Kidney

A few weeks ago Selena Gomez surprised the world with some shocking news. Back in May the star underwent a kidney transplant. The donor? Gomez’ best friend Francia Raisa. The pair quickly bonded after meeting at a charity event in 2007 saying, “We really did meet at the perfect time.”

Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks normal, healthy tissue, in 2015. It can lead to damage of the kidneys, heart, lungs, skin and joints. In May she was told her kidneys were no longer functioning the way they needed to be and was in need of a kidney transplant. With no biological matches her best friend stepped up and just so happened to be a perfect match.

“Honestly I think everyone knew she needed one, so if I was in her best friends situation I would have done the same thing,” Jazmen Walters, a junior, stated. “She was probably scared, but relieved when one of her best friends came through for her.”

Gomez said in an Instagram post, “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”

Gomez thanked her best friend saying, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friends Francia Raisia. She gave me the ultimate sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.” She wrapped up the passage by expressing how grateful she is and how much she loves her.
