A set of traditional rules have been reimplemented, aiming to restore a sense of normalcy and uphold the district’s long-standing standards. By bringing back previous regulations, the school hopes to balance the past with the present. Due to COVID-19, Texas relaxed on previous rules to allow students to be successful during this period of time. Now that life is returning to normalcy, so are the standards for attendance.
Before the pandemic, the rule was a student was allowed three absences in any class period to exempt the semester exam. This policy was used to encourage more students to attend school. This year, Humble ISD decided to allow students four absences in a class and still earn exemptions.
The absences are counted per class period, not the whole day. The types of absences that don’t count against exemptions are school-related absences and doctor visits, if the student returns the same day with a doctor’s note. Any other absences count against exemptions.
There are complaints from students about how they think it’s not fair that they only get four days as “sick days.” However, administrators hope this policy with help reduce the amount of absences because there were problems with students not completing their seat time from many missed days. To prevent that, administrators ask for students to work around schedules and appointments so they are present in school more. Students should monitor their absences in HAC and contact their assistant principal with questions.
