In plays, many people may only know about the actors and the story, but many do not know about what goes on behind the scenes to put on the show. The production crew has a huge role in how the play develops.
“I always worked in special effects and lighting is something I like personally because I get to make things look good,” junior Adrian Garcia said. “Without lighting the effect just isn’t there.”
Putting on a play is a long process that takes up a lot of time. The production crew is currently preparing for their upcoming musical “Newsies,” which will show at the performing arts center from Oct. 24 through Oct. 28 at 7pm.
“Sometimes here and there you get anxious, but all that really matters is at the end we created a show for people to watch and enjoy,” junior De’Niro Carter said. “So I guess, this is the part where we need to lock in and do better.”
There are many parts to making a play. Each part has its own role on what to do to make the play presentable and enjoyable for audiences.
“At the top, there are stage managers who manage and keep everyone on track and make sure everyone stays on a schedule and is ready for the big rehearsals,” Theatre Tech Teacher Steven Aguilar said. “We have our set which is on the stage where we usually build all that stuff. Then we have lights, sounds, costumes, [props] and makeup.”
Theater tech gives students the opportunity to not just learn the art of acting but building the show. Without the production crew, there is no show.
“I enjoy being able to stay after school and do the things I love and learn more about it,” sophomore Lexi Sandoval said. “I think costuming is important because it’s literally what the actors go out on stage for.”
Sandoval helps prepare for the play by making costumes. The production crew is important for making the play feel real.
“The impact they have really makes what’s in our brain real,” Aguilar said. “We have an image and we have a picture. And it kind of comes to life with the crew making that.”
