The JROTC program has made some new additions: new equipment and new Major Marcus Carlstrom. The old JROTC equipment had two walls and ropes. This year, the district installed new equipment, headlined by a ninja warrior course.
“Humble ISD wanted to do something special for those (J)ROTC students so they can maximize their full potential,” Principal Will Falker said. “If they go to the service, they’re going to have to do things like that, so we want to give them that military readiness piece. At the same time, it gives our students a chance to practice and have fun.”
JROTC does many various competitions, such as drill meets, shooting competitions, physical fitness competitions and academic bowls.
“We haven’t gone out there to get our hands on [the course], but we absolutely plan on using it,” Carlstrom said. “I know the cadets are excited to try the course out. It can help our agility and body presence, so we definitely want to use it.”
JROTC trains through running, obstacle courses and lifting weights. The program is designed to establish leadership skills in students.
“I like physical training the most because I like running and doing all the workouts,” senior Eddie Malone said. “JROTC is not what everybody thinks it is. We’re a family that allows each other to be who we are.”
JROTC participates in volunteer work often. They do various volunteering, helping whoever needs it.
“If not physical training, my favorite part about ROTC is the volunteer work,” junior Andrew Wiggins said. “I see potential in [Carlstrom] making this year better than last year. I definitely see us using the new equipment for physical training.”
Before becoming a JROTC Major, Carlstrom was in ROTC in college before serving 15 years as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
“Being able to take my marine knowledge and share it with these kids is great,” Carlstrom said. “We want to install discipline, work ethic and a good sense of community into these kids. I’m hoping to build upon what this program has already built and take it to the next level.”
