With jazz starting up, the band is preparing their year with festive classics. This helps new students be familiar with this new type of music.
“We’re preparing for concert music more geared on the winter side,” Jazz Director Brian Best said. “We’re going to play around the community, but for the spring semester we’re going to do highly competitive festivals. The Bill Watrous Jazz Festival at Sam Houston State University to pick three pieces to perform at the festival.”
The fall season is to get familiar with the new music and to show festive spirit, while they get ready for competitions in the spring season.
“Jazz band was introduced to me in middle school and that’s how it started,” sophomore Evan Salas said. “My biggest inspiration is William Weathers. He balances all types of jazz music and it helps me. I’m looking forward to having fun and performing for region with good musicians.”
Jazz is a different type of music from regular band: a normal marching band at a high school performs at highschool games and halftime shows. Jazz is completely different with faster music and different instruments.
“I was influenced to join jazz band by my great grandfather and was drawn to join,” senior Rylan Nunez said. “The competitions are my favorite part of jazz band; we’ve been to multiple colleges and performed in front of jazz professionals. The solo competitions are fun because I’ve placed high. I could see myself pursuing a career and taking an education for music.”
