After many months, the mural at the Humble ISD Early Childhood Center painted by the art club was presented in front of everyone, including Principal Will Falker, on April 7. The art club was invited by Amanda Price, the principal of the Early Childhood Center, to paint a mural alongside other schools in the district, which they started in January.
“The students were interested in painting a mural and volunteering time to share their talents and joy about our school to little preschoolers,” art teacher Noelle Drop said. “They were always working on trying to improve their skills and craft of art in order to share their talents with others.”
The design of the mural came from junior Daniel Byrd, the historian of the art club. The mural’s design was of baby eagles dreaming of flying through the clouds and later on graduating, to symbolize the kids feeling the same way about their future at the school.
“It was scary to see something I came up with as a rough sketch is now fully colored and rendered on a wall for people to see in the future,” Byrd said. “I’m proud that something I came up with is now going to be there for years to come. It’s exciting to think that little kids will see the mural and want to come to the school later on.”
The club all pitched in when they started working through sketching and painting the mural on the wall to make the design from Byrd come to life.
“It’s great seeing everyone come and work on it together,” art club president Charlize Aventua said. “You can see where everyone’s input was, but it was overall still a group project for us. I enjoyed working with the club to create the mural.”
The art club is completely student-led, so the sponsors wanted the creation of the mural to be student-led as well. Many members went to the center to work on the mural over the breaks and after school to get it finished in time.
“We worked on [the mural] not just because we had to, but because it helps the kids and gives us a lot more experience,” art club officer Olivia Williams said. “We had more time to work on the mural during spring break. It took a lot of hard work but we knew that it would be nice to help the community.”
The art club will be going back next year to paint a few more things at the Early Childhood Center campus. The art club is working to help the community and showcase their love for art.
“It was a big collaboration,” Byrd said. “It wasn’t just art club members and officers, but sponsors and even random people came by to help. It was a big community project that we all could work on together.”
