Chivalry: Is It Still Alive?
Chivalry is defined as a quality held by knights and gentlemen offering courage, honor and protection to women. Chivalry can be very important in many ways including which way a girl should walk on a side walk. In previous decades or even centuries, chivalry has died over and over again. If you look at the younger generations you may not see chivalry as much as you used to.
Chivalry isn’t gone just yet. But it is everywhere— people opening doors for each other, helping someone cross the street or simply picking something up for someone. Sadly modern parents don’t teach chivalry like their parents did. Maybe they thought, “I want to raise my kid differently from my parents and be there for them.” What modern parents don’t see is that chivalry is disappearing and that it is important.
“I think that society is teaching kids and teens that it’s okay to be selfish, that it’s okay to focus on yourself,” freshman counselor Danny Wheeler said.
Parents and teachers teach kids that it is okay to be on your own and to focus on yourself in order to succeed; but what parents and teachers don’t know is that that teaching this to your kids can make them selfish and uncaring for other people. That is what people don’t see today. The world has become a selfish place and we need to fix it.
“There are a lot of things that have changed but I still see it,” Wheeler said. “It is a lot less than what it used to be. When I was a kid I held the door for every girl because that was how I was taught. I still see that from time to time and it stands out.”
Chivalry is taught less than what it used to be. Though the concept of chivalry may seem like a lost art, it should be here to stay and it should be taught more often.
