The “merc with a mouth” returns to the big screen, but this time with The Wolverine. “Deadpool & Wolverine” directed by Shawn Levy is the newest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which showcases Deadpool’s peaceful life that comes crashing down when the Time Variance Authority hires him as a safeguard of the multiverse. This leads to him uniting with soon to be best-buddy Wolverine to help him on his mission to save his universe from extinction.
When the film was announced back in September of 2022, fans speculated if Deadpool even needed a third film along with the other installments in the franchise. Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine was odd since after playing the character for over 18 years ago, he said he was done after 2017s “Logan.” Although the ending of “Logan” was a send-off to Jackman’s portrayal of the character, Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, said they wouldn’t be touching the ending or even that version of the character and said this version of Wolverine will be an alternate version from another universe. Reynolds was set on making the perfect superhero film with the help from director and friend Levy who he had previously worked with on films like “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project.”
After nearly a year and a half of waiting, on the same night of the 2024 Super Bowl, the first teaser for “Deadpool & Wolverine” was released and sent all fans into shock, including me. With the film scheduled to release on July 26, all fans could do is wait, and the wait was definitely worth it. I watched this film opening night to avoid spoilers and it was the best decision I made. This film had it all; comedy, action, tension, all of it.
Reynolds once again proves he was born to play Deadpool with his comedic talent and acting, but my personal favorite parts included Jackman’s Wolverine. The portrayal of Wolverine in this film is different from anything we have seen in the past X-Men films. The intensity Jackman has as he portrays Wolverine perfectly matches with Reynolds’ Deadpool as the chemistry between these two actors is shown perfectly throughout the film.
Another thing special about this movie is the soundtrack. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of classic rock and contemporary hits, perfectly complements the film’s tone, with hits from Madonna, Green Day and even *NSYNC.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a feast for the eyes. The action scenes are choreographed with precision and creativity, making full use of both characters’ unique abilities.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a perfect film for the fans of the Marvel comics. It showed a new side to both Deadpool and Wolverine, with great storytelling and fantastic action. Reynolds and Jackman put on fantastic performances, and I can’t wait to see these two on crazy adventures again.
I rate “Deadpool & Wolverine” 4 out of 5 stars.
