Released in theaters on July 26, Walt Disney Studios gave us our unknowingly needed duo: Wade Wilson, who is referred to as Deadpool, and Logan, famously known as Wolverine. “Deadpool & Wolverine” displays the definition of a “love-hate relationship,” where Deadpool travels to another dimension to revive Wolverine in order to save his current Earth from demolition.
Deadpool is introduced at the beginning of the movie as an individual wanting to be a part of a team called the Avengers. The Avengers team is made up of superheroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. For those who have seen the Deadpool movies, you would understand why him wanting to be a part of a team is shocking. Deadpool’s persona is known to be a too-cool-for-school, cocky, sarcastic and a non-needing team individual, so for Disney to decide to suddenly flip his well-known attribute trait is quite astounding to say the least.
While this director’s decision caught me by surprise, I can say that it was quickly made up for with the guideline of the timeline. After preventing Deadpool’s girlfriend’s death in 2018 using time-travel, Deadpool jumps the timeline hoping to give his life true meaning, which is when he asks to be a part of the Avengers. In the end, he is rejected by a character named Happy Hogan. Years after being rejected, Deadpool is working the job of a used-car salesman with his friend Peter Wisdom, who is a former X-Men member when Deadpool suddenly gets kidnapped by the Time Variance Authority while celebrating his birthday.
After being kidnapped, Hogan tells Deadpool that he is an important figure needed to help stop the destruction of his Earth after the literal Earth-stopping death of Wolverine while saving his daughter, Laura.
This is where the adventure begins for Deadpool as he jumps through timelines to find a version of Wolverine that will help save his earth; however, after finding a wolverine from a sacred timeline, it is later revealed by Hogan that he is the Wolverine who let down his own Earth. Deadpool believes Wolverine can still help him fight for his Earth and they form a sibling bond with each other as they curse each other out, physically fist fight each other and in the end come together to help stop Deadpool’s world from desolation.
The duo Wolverine and Deadpool was perfectly displayed in the characters’ interactions with one another, even though Deadpool’s language was a little watered down. With the tone down of Deadpool’s raw and rowdy personality contrasting to the fact that they did a top five collaboration in Marvel history, I am proud to say I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars.
