As of March 2, the girls soccer team has a record of 15-5-1. Head coach Blake Bellow and the girls team are in the hunt to finish far in the playoffs this season. After being co-district champions last year with Kingwood High School, the team plans on winning districts and going far this season.
“We had a lot of new girls on varsity last year with new freshmen and sophomores, so I think this year we are more experienced and more connected than we were last year,” Bellow said. “Our goal for the rest of the season is to fight for each other no matter the outcome of the game.”
The team has been dealing with injuries this season, which has allowed players to step up and play for one another. One player that has been injured this year is senior Ava Fruge.
“[Before my injury] practices were really fun,” Fruge said. “Before every game I would pray and [chill].”
The team is on a three-game winning streak right now, with wins against Humble High School (10-1), Kingwood High School (3-2) and North Shore High School (5-1).
“I don’t have any [future] plans soccer wise, I’m going to college to go to nursing school,” senior Hayley Price said. “As a team we always pray right before call outs. That’s our biggest thing, we always pray as a whole team together.”
The team hasn’t held much consistency in the head coach position, with them having four head coaches in the last six years. Bellow plans to establish a more permanent culture, though.
“Our goal is always to go to state and to always shoot for the stars, but our biggest goal is to bring culture to the program,” Bellow said. “We’re trying to keep consistency, trying to establish a culture and expectations girls can remember.”
