The swimming and diving team had a season to remember by winning the region round and competing at state. Swimming and diving competed at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at The University of Texas in Austin.
“I’m excited for this weekend,” junior diver Kainoa Reese said. “I’m most excited to not get the season over, but to take a break for a while after the season.”
The state competition was two days long, with the first day being the competition to advance to finals. The second day was all the finalists from the day before competing to become a state champion.
“It made it extra special because my whole family was there,” senior swimmer John Simmons said. “All it takes is dedication. Hard work beats talent every time. It was a great way to end my high school career.”
Only three people per event at the regional round can qualify for state. Reese placed second in boys diving, advancing him to state.
“Last year Kainoa’s goal was to break 400 and this year he achieved that goal,” diving coach Tommie Randall said. “Kainoa’s goal was to make state and to qualify for All-American.”
The state finalists this season were boys team fifth place overall, third place in boys 200 medley relay, third place in boys freestyle relay, senior Eva Simmons placed thirteenth in 200 individual medley, senior John Simmons placed first in 100 backstroke and third place in 200 freestyle and junior Landon Clark placed twelfth in individual medley.
“One thing I would say to the underclassman is to just show up and it’ll work out for you,” Simmons said. “Anything is possible if you work hard.”
