The boys soccer team finished the season with 15 wins, which is the most in program history. They made their sixth playoff appearance in 19 years. The team also finished the season with their first playoff wins since 2010, breaking a 15-year drought. They also earned their first area title in program history.
“We got bounced from the playoffs via state finalists, so we’re competing at a very high level,” boys head coach Joseph Garner said. “I think that it’ll only improve next year with nine starters returning.”
They were a regional semifinalist. Seniors Jonathan Marks and David Henriquez have both signed to play soccer in college. Marks signed with St. Edward’s University and Henriquez signed with the University of St. Thomas.
Freshman Pedro Olvera set a program record for goals for a freshman (nine), and was also the first freshman to ever lead the team in scoring. He was named Top Newcomer of District 23-6A. Senior Chris Guardiola set a program record with 10 assists this year. Senior David Henriquez was named District Defensive MVP for the second straight season.
“I think those guys are gonna be hungry next year,” Garner said. “As much as we accomplished this season, we feel like we’ve got a lot more that we can achieve.”
The boy’s team’s first playoff win in over 15 years came against Deer Park in the first round of the playoffs.
“That moment to win in front of a really great crowd at home with that energy was awesome,” Garner said. “It felt like we had arrived, we are a playoff team now. We’re a winning program.”
