Being a team that has only been around for three years, girls lacrosse made their season memorable by making it to district playoffs for the second year in a row and getting a lot closer while doing it.
“This season has really shown how far we have come as a team,” senior captain Catherine McLeer said. “We have so many seniors and their hard work hasn’t gone unseen. Showcasing our talent to the underclassmen lights up my heart.”
Zoe Westbrook, a senior that has been on the team all three years, won the varsity team Most Valuable Player (MVP) award this season for her performance as a midfielder.
“I love getting to work with other committed and determined people in practices and games,” Westbrook said. “I’ve learned a lot about the importance of playing with confidence and using that to push myself forward.”
Something that set this season apart from others was their ability to come together and build up their use of teamwork.
“I’ve been a part of this team for the three years it’s been part of our school and I would say this season was way different from the rest because of the way our team and coaches worked together,” senior attacker Briannah Block said. “Lacrosse brought a new sense of teamwork to me.”
Block was a swimmer for 12 years before joining lacrosse and has noted how different the two sports are, especially recognizing that fact this season.
“Being a part of a team where you all have to work together to achieve the goal you all want makes you put more pressure on yourself,” Block said. “The whole team is counting on you. If you do one little thing wrong, like pass the ball at the wrong second, the whole game could be ruined.”
Along with Westbrook’s MVP award, junior Chevie Ross also got honored this season, winning Division III All-State Midfield/Attack at Large from the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League.
“I saw so much improvement not just in our new girls but also our returners,” Westbrook said. “Being surrounded by coaches and players with experience and knowledge on the field has significantly improved our abilities and skills on the field, and I think each year this will only continue to improve as our foundation grows stronger.”
Not only has the team grown stronger in their plays by making it to playoffs again this year, they have also seemed to master the idea of teamwork and what it means to truly play together.
“The team is like a big family of new sisters and I love them all deeply,” McLeer said. “Being on the field has changed me into this person that I didn’t know I could be: a leader, a friend, even a safe place for someone to be themselves and just have fun. I’ve learned that even after a long day, my girls can cheer me up no matter what happens.”
