Varsity boys wait anxiously as the race is about to start

Sophomore Summer Call on the varsity girls cross country team and the varsity boys cross country team competed at the state meet on Nov. 6 in Round rock.

“I didn’t do the best as I could have done better my first mile of the race,” Call said. “Next year I am going to be stronger and better.”

Call is Atascocita’s second girl to make the state meet and finished in 40th place with a time of 18:49.

“My plans for track are to run a 4:45-4:48 mile and make it to state in track,” Call said. “My goals for next cross country season are to break into the seventeen minutes and win the regional and state meet.”

On the boys side, the race for the final podium spot was incredibly close between Atascocita and El Paso Eastwood, coming down to a one point difference. Eastwood ended up edging out Atascocita leading to a 4th place finish for Atascocita.

“While we were pretty disappointed with the team finish, and it’s hard not to with the goals we set, we gave the race our all and we have to live with the results,” team captain David Heckman said. “To come so close to a podium spot yet miss it will forever be ingrained in the team’s mind next year when we go to state so that we won’t let it happen again.”

Heckman placed 92nd with a time of 16:30. Luckily the Eagles will only have two of their top seven graduates this year which should allow them to have a successful season next fall.

“Being a senior is fun as it is my last year, but there is that sense of urgency with every race to make it count,” senior Noah Joy said. “It’s also disappointing as I feel like I had to make up a lot of lost time this season due to having to miss last season due to injury. But seeing the way I’ve progressed this season from last year has been good.”

Joy was third for the team at the state meet and finished in 48th with a time of 15:59.
